Writing Process Photo Essay

When it comes to writing, I like to keep my writing process consistent. For me, I like to follow a mental plan, which allows me to work efficiently and get an assignment done in one sitting. Additionally, my plan includes starting assignments early, regardless of the hour, and allowing myself to have enough time to produce a well-structured essay. Usually, I start writing around noon when my classes are done. I tend to avoid writing within a time constraint because I like to implement my ideas right away and not keep them in my head to a point where I forget them.

Whenever I write, I prefer to do so in a quiet environment. While a library might seem like the place to go, because I am a first-year student who lives in a dorm, the latter is a better choice for me. It is nice, quiet, and much more comfortable than the library which has wooden seats.  Additionally, in the dorm, I am able to take advantage of an external monitor on my desk. Because I could dedicate one monitor for doing research and use my laptop screen for writing the essay, I am able to work more efficiently.

Working in the dorm has its perks. Living on the third floor, I have a nice view of Davis and its wildlife. I often find myself looking outside at the birds when I get stuck or am thinking, as this helps me clear up my mind and boost any possible ideas.

Since I was introduced to Google’s online services in high school, Google Docs has been my word processor of choice. Its flexibility allows me to efficiently continue writing on the go, as well as quickly switch between my two laptops. Additionally, by using Firefox, I have the ability to send tabs to other devices. Thus, I can easily work in different locations. As a result, it is where I do all my work like creating a source pool, doing my brainstorm, and writing my draft.

Once I am done writing a draft, I like to get more comfortable before spending an hour or so rereading it and cleaning it of errors. Since I don’t need to do much research anymore, my external monitor is no longer useful for me in terms of productivity. Thus, I usually grab my Chromebook and head to the “common area” in the dorm building where there are couches. Sitting on a couch allows me to get more comfortable and focus on the draft.

Because I like to do assignments in one sitting, at times I find myself writing for a whole day. Thus, at some point, I find myself hungry. If it is during the weekday I would go to the dining commons for either a meal or get a snack like a banana. In the weekends I find myself cooking food as seen in the photo. Since my health is more important to me than a grade, I take a break and eat whenever I feel hungry.

While eating might make my hunger go away, it won’t help me regain lost energy as a result of writing. Thus at some point, while I am writing, I need more fuel to keep my ideas going. This is where the importance of coffee comes into my writing process. Making Coffee allows me to get up and stretch as well as regain some of the energy that I lost to writing.

In the few breaks that I take from writing a draft or essay, I spend my time programming. What might seem unconditional of my writing process is that while I am writing an essay, in the back of my mind I am thinking about programming. Thus, when a cool idea comes up and I want to implement it into an existing personal project or simply write it down, I would take a small break from the draft and work my project.

I am very content with my writing process, however, I feel that I should be taking more breaks between writing. Since I feel my productivity and mind slowing down after time, I feel that I should dedicate a few minutes every hour to stand up and stretch. This would allow me to open up my mind to new ideas as well as do something that is positive for my health.
